Business Studies Department Vision

We aim to give students an insight into what’s involved in working in or running a business. Wherever possible the lessons include real life scenarios to show students how they are learning current and relevant content. We hope that some of our students will go on to be the entrepreneurs of tomorrow!

Business Studies Curriculum

Business Studies Curriculum

Business Studies is only available as a GCSE option subject. We study the Edexcel GCSE Business Studies course which is broken down into three units:


Introduction to Small Business (25% of the course) 

Overview of content

This unit contains five topics:

·         Spotting a business opportunity

·         Showing enterprise

·         Putting a business idea into practice

·         Making the start-up effective

·         Understanding the economic context

Overview of assessment

·         Written examination: 45 minutes

·         Multiple-choice and objective test questions with a total of 40 marks

 

Investigating Small Business (25% of the course)

Overview of content

·         Same content as Unit 1

Overview of assessment

·         This unit is internally assessed under controlled conditions

·         Students complete one Edexcel-set task with a total of 40 marks.

·         Research/investigation – approximately two weeks of curriculum of time

·         Analysis/evaluation of task (final write-up) – approximately one week of curriculum time

·         The task is internally marked by teachers and moderated by Edexcel.

 

Building a Business (50% of the course)

Overview of content

This unit contains five topics:

·         Marketing

·         Meeting customer needs

·         Effective financial management

·         Effective people management

·         The wider world affecting business

Overview of assessment

·         Written examination: 1 hour 30 minutes

·         Students are required to answer all questions from Sections A, B and C.

·         Questions comprise of a combination of multiple-choice, short- and extended-answer, data response and scenario-based questions with a total of 90 marks

 


How do we assess students in Business Studies?

Students are assessed each Learning Cycle (4 in a year) based on the content they have covered in that cycle. This allows us to return to areas that requires further teaching and enables us to accurately predict end of course grades.

 

External assessments are as follows:

Unit 1 Assessment:

·         Written examination: 45 minutes

·         Multiple-choice and objective test questions with a total of 40 marks

Homework is set regularly on Show My Homework in line with the Academy policy. Students may type or write their homework and are able to return via email or in person.
