Catch Up Funding 2016 - 2017

We have reviewed the impact of last year’s spending, the NFER and Pupil Premium Toolkit to implement this year’s spending. Along with our Vision and Key Drivers, we underpin our Academy Improvement Plan and day to day working with the NFER ‘Building Blocks to Success’.

  1. Whole-school ethos on attainment for all

  • Addressing behaviour and attendance

  • High quality teaching for all

  • Meeting individual learning needs

  • Deploying staff effectively

  • Data driven and responding to evidence

  • Clear, responsive leadership

  • Kingswood Academy –Catch-Up Funding

    What is Catch Up Funding?

Schools receive Catch Up Funding annually from the government.  The amount of funding is determined by the number of Year 7 students attending the school who did not make expected progress in literacy and mathematics at primary school.

    Why is Catch-Up Funding required?

It is widely recognised that students who have fallen behind during their time at primary school and have not made as much progress as expected will also fail to make good progress at secondary school.  Catch Up funding is provided to ensure that intervention is put in place to accelerate the learning of these students while they are in the first year of secondary education so that they can catch up with their peers.

How must this money be used?

The funding must be used to provide addition interventions for Year 7 students to rapidly develop their skills in mathematics and literacy.  It can be used to pay for additional staffing, for staff training or for specialist resources.  How this money is used is closely scrutinised by the governing body of the academy.

    Our Context

In 2016/2017 Kingswood Academy had an average proportion of Catch-Up students, with 15% of this the Year 7 students in receipt of Catch Up Funding, compared to 28.2% of all students nationally. In 2017/18 the number of Year 7 students in receipt of Catch Up Funding is 12.4%.

As an academy we have the highest expectations of all our students and we continuously strive to remove any barriers which have a detrimental effect on students’ progress. In line with the most successful schools (DfE, 2015) the academy’s vision and key drivers have enabled an ethos of high attainment for all students.

Success of the 2016/17 Catch-Up Funding

In the 2016/17 academic year almost all students who had not made expected progress in literacy at primary school went on to accelerate their progress in English, making progress in line with their peers by the end of year 7.  Almost half of the students who had fallen behind in Maths at primary school had also caught up with their peers.
